During the great days of the south maitland coalfields, when the coal mines around cessnock employed thousands of men, 1 hotel sold Tooheys beer…. The Australia Hotel.
The 1st publicans licence was issued to a Joseph Sumner on the 1st of February 1923. Total cost to build the hotel was 23,000 pounds with the opening commemorated with a special lunch in the dining room.
Today the hotel is family owned & has been through several renovations & additions. Much of the 1920’s character still remains within the hotel & in Feb 2007 the adjoining motel was purchased.
Similar to the days of old, the australia is still a favorite watering hole for many a miner. The walls are a museum of mining memorabilia. Stories, photos, maps & an array of helmets & lamps surround the interior of the hotel.
A visit to the Hunter Valley is not complete without a stop off at the Australia Hotel.
